|

Laois senior hurlers will fight among themselves this March, but all in a good cause, after details of their 'Fight Night' fundraiser were released.
Senior manager Niall Rigney, along with local boxing coach Pat Ryan, are organising the event in aid of the Players Fund, and it will take place in The Heritage Hotel in Portlaoise on March 6.
Twelve players off the current panel will battle it out to claim a year's worth of dressing room bragging rights, while local boxer's from the Portlaoise Boxing Club will also put on exhibition bouts at various stages during the night.
With the fundraiser set to take place on the same night the senior footballers play Armagh in the NFL in O'Moore Park, the organisers are hoping the influx of Laois fans into the county town will help boost the numbers attending the event. Music will be provided afterwards by popular local band The Jury, with tickets costing just €20.
Speaking of the event, Laois manager NIall Rigney said they decided on the 'Fight Night' to offer a bit of variety in their fundraising. "It's something different and it should be a bit of craic. We'll have 12 of the lads taking part and the rest will be involved in some way, selling tickets or whatever they're needed to do on the night."
Tickets are available from any panel member or from the County Board offices, and Rigney is hopeful the event gets the response they are looking for. "I know people who can't attend will probably buy tickets, and we'll be grateful for that, but we're looking for as many people as possible to show up and help create a good atmosphere on the night. Tommy Keane has been very good to us and with the match in town that night as well, we're hoping a good crowd will turn up."
Proceeds on the night will go towards the players training fund, as Rigney points out. "Any money we make on the night will be going to the training fund, when you see what happened to Zane last year, if a player is going to be out of work for a long time then we can at least look after him."
The night will be similar to the one which Kildare footballers run each year, while Killeshin GAA club organised a Fight Night of their own late last year and it proved to be huge success for all involved. With tickets on sale from all panel members and all of them set to be in attendance on the night, it's an opportunity for Laois fans of all ages to meet the squad. |

Pairings announced for 'Fight Night' fundraiser
By Rory Delaney
As the much anticipated Laois senior hurlers Fight Night fundraiser approaches, the 12 men set to do battle on the night have been paired off, and already a few intriguing battles are on the cards.
While Shane Dollard and Colin Delaney are more accustomed to fighting it out for a place in Laois' midfield, they will now come face to face in the ring, in what should be keenly and evenly contested bout.
Another match up worth keeping an eye out for will be Ballyfin's JJ McHugh taking in Galmoy's Jimmy Dunne. Dunne shot down Kilkenny at the weekend, but can he do the same to McHugh? All will be revealed on March 6.
Laois captain Brian Campion will be hoping to lead by example when he faces off against Clonaslee St Manman's John Rowney, while another heavyweight clash will see Owen Houlihan take on Brian Dunne. Secondary schools teacher Eamon Jackman will be hoping to teach John Brophy a lesson, while in the final encounter, The Harps John Prior and Portlaoise's Brian Smith will meet in the lightweight division!
All proceeds made on the night will go towards the players training fund, to cover expenses occurred by injury or loss of work. The event will take place on March 6 in The Heritage Hotel, with tickets on sale now for €20.
Contact the Laois County Board offices at 05786 60674.
The full list of pairings is as follows: Colin Delaney V Shane Dollard; Brian Campion V John Rowney; Owen Houlihan V Brian Dunne; JJ McHugh V Jimmy Dunne; John Prior V Brian Smith; John Brophy V Eamon Jackman.
For full profiles on all the participant's, see next week's Leinster Express. |

Are many people thinking of going to this? Should be a good night, I was talking to someone in Killeshin after they had ran something similar and it was a big hit down there. _________________ A committee is a cul-de-sac down which ideas are lured and then quietly strangled. |

Yeah, it's a big balls up on the hotels part. It's double booked with our Dinner Dance, when they announced the dates I thought we were in one of the smaller rooms. They only copped the mistake last week, doesn't look great for all involved. Dinner Dance is going ahead at least _________________ A committee is a cul-de-sac down which ideas are lured and then quietly strangled. |

Should be a good night, hope they get a good turn out. I think the plan is to raise enough to put towards a training camp or something to that effect for the players, so hopefully they meet their target.
As for the lads fighting on the night, Brian Stapleton sounds like a beast of a man! _________________ A committee is a cul-de-sac down which ideas are lured and then quietly strangled. |

Can't access it now, but Alf Harveys Facebook had a photo of Rowney after beating Brian Dunne, perhaps someone could post up a link to it. Didnt make it myself but was talking to someon on Saturdya night who was and said it was a great night, huge crowds and tickets sold for it by all accounts. Think the Clubs also donated towards it. _________________ When you ain’t got nothin’, you got nothin’ to lose. |

I was in at it but unfortunately couldn't stay for all of it. From the fights I did see, you'd have to hand it to the hurlers, they really got into it and the fights were fairly serious, they really went after each other which added a lot to it. There was a few serious slaps thrown, and they had lads scoring the fights as well. Good night, they got a good crowd too.
No knockouts leixman, but there were two standing counts in the Jackman v Stapleton fight!
The exhibition fights were good as well _________________ A committee is a cul-de-sac down which ideas are lured and then quietly strangled. |
